Qiang Xie

Counseling Psychology PhD Candidate at the University of Wisconsin-Madison

Welcome!

Hello! My name is Qiang Xie (Pron. “chee-ahng shee-eh”), and I am a fifth-year Ph.D. candidate in the Department of Counseling Psychology at the University of Wisconsin-Madison (advisor: Dr. Simon Goldberg). I am trained as a scientist-practitioner in the Counseling Psychology Ph.D. program. Before starting my Ph.D. training in 2021, I got my master's degree in Psychology at Beijing Normal University.

As a psychological scientist in training, I have a profound interest in studying the development, optimization, and implementation of technology-delivered interventions, such as smartphone meditation apps. Through such research endeavors, I aspire to expand access to affordable, low-burden, and personalized mental health care for marginalized populations (e.g., people of color, international students, individuals from lower socioeconomic backgrounds) who often face barriers to accessing traditional psychotherapy. Additionally, I am passionate about investigating culturally sensitive approaches to supporting the mental health of international students and the development of international psychology trainees. I am currently a graduate research assistant at the Center for Healthy Minds and Psychotherapy and Contemplative Science Lab, where my work revolves around these specific research interests. In 2023, I also held a graduate research assistant position at the Implementation Science and Engineering Lab. I have led research projects centered on these interests and published 19 peer-reviewed and 6 editorially reviewed articles (19 as first or co-first author) in scientific journals.

My clinical training in the doctoral program spans community mental health, university counseling, health psychology/behavioral medicine, and psychological assessment. I have provided brief bilingual (Mandarin-English) therapy to university students and community clients. In health psychology/behavioral medicine, I supported patients managing chronic health conditions, lifestyle changes, psychosomatic concerns, and common psychiatric symptoms. My assessment training included conducting clinical interviews, administering and interpreting personality and cognitive tests, providing feedback, and writing integrated reports for clients presenting with ADHD, trauma-related concerns, and other psychiatric disorders. Starting in June 2026, I will complete my psychology predoctoral internship (clinical science model) at The Ohio State University Department of Psychiatry and Behavioral Health. My clinical approaches are deeply connected with and inspired by my research. In my clinical work, I am interested in using third-wave cognitive-behavioral approaches. I also actively utilize digital technology, such as mental health apps, to augment treatment.

In my free time, I enjoy spending time with my friends. I am a fan of hiking, traveling, photography, tennis, and movies. I am also passionate about disseminating scientific findings to the general public through op-eds. My article on informal meditation practices, published in Psychology Today, has garnered 48,000 views as of September 6th, 2024, and has been featured as a Meditation Essential Read on the platform.
